Modes of Engagement
In Riomaggiore, ‘doing’ is a matter of noticing. It is the shift from searching for highlights to paying attention to the rhythm of the stone and the sea.
The Art of
Presence
Beyond the Checklist
We invite you to challenge the idea of productivity in your travel. The most meaningful experiences in this village unfold slowly and often without signs.
To ‘do’ something here is to engage with the village’s spirit. It is a choice of how you spend your attention.
This page is not a schedule to be filled, but a guide to different kinds of presence. It acknowledges that your energy, the season, and the light will dictate what feels right.
Slow down. Trust your senses. Allow the village to unfold at its own pace.
Riomaggiore offers very few formal attractions, and that is precisely its strength. There are no museums to rush through, no monuments to check off a list.
Active Presence
The harbor of Riomaggiore is not a sandy beach—it is a slipway of smooth rocks and crystal-clear water. Swimming here is an act of joining the village’s rhythm. You share the water with fishing boats, children jumping from the rocks, and the occasional octopus.
Bring water shoes and swim early in the morning when the light is soft and the crowds are gone. The water is coldest in early June but clearest in September.

Swimming at the Harbor Rocks
No lifeguard. Bring water shoes for the rocks. Showers available nearby.

Contemplative Movement
The Lardarina is a stairway of over 300 steps connecting the train station to the upper village. It is not a hike—it is a meditation on the effort required to live in a vertical world. Every turn reveals a new angle of the rooftops and the sea.
Don’t rush it. Stop at every landing. By the time you reach the top, you will understand why the village is built the way it is.
Moderate to challenging

Contemplative / Physical
Walking the Via di Lardarina
About 15-20 minutes up. Bring water. Wear sturdy shoes.

Sensory Experience
Sciacchetra is the rare, sweet wine of the Cinque Terre—made from grapes dried on mats in the sea breeze. It is precious, expensive, and deeply local. A single sip connects you to centuries of vertical agriculture.
Go to the Cooperative in the upper village. Ask for a small glass and take your time. This is not a wine to drink quickly.
Low
The sweet dessert wine that carries the history of the terraces in every sip.
Sensory / Reflective
Tasting Sciacchetra
Available at local enotecas. Expect to pay 10-15 EUR for a small tasting.

Editorial Interlude
In a village built on a cliff, ‘lost’ is a relative term. You will always eventually find the main street or the sea. The time you spend in between—in the quiet carruggi where no one else is walking—is where you truly meet Riomaggiore.
The Value of Getting Lost
Pilgrimage Walk
The sanctuary of Montenero sits 340 meters above sea level, overlooking all five villages. The path is steep but well-marked, passing through olive groves and wildflowers. At the top, a small chapel and a terrace offer a view that makes the effort worthwhile.
Start early in the morning to avoid the heat. Bring a picnic and eat it on the terrace. The silence up there is remarkable.
Challenging
A steep climb to a sanctuary with views that reward every step.
Active / Spiritual
Hiking to Santuario di Montenero
About 1.5-2 hours round trip. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.

Above Riomaggiore
In the end, the most meaningful moments in Riomaggiore are often the ones that were unplanned and unrecorded.
It is the way the salt felt on your skin after a swim, the sound of a neighbor’s shutters opening in the morning, or the silence of the high paths at dusk.
Give yourself permission to slow down. Trust your senses. The village is not a task to be completed, but a rhythm to be joined.
