Apartment Rentals
An apartment in Monterosso means options: wake in the medieval old town and walk to the beach, or wake in Fegina with the Mediterranean at your doorstep. This is the only Cinque Terre village where both are possible.
The Village
That Has It All
The Monterosso Advantage
Two villages in one. The tunnel through Aurora Tower connects medieval Monterosso to beachfront Fegina. They feel like different places, and your apartment choice determines which experience you live.
Flat terrain exists. Unlike every other Cinque Terre village, Monterosso has actual level ground. Apartments along Via Fegina require no stairs. This matters more than you think until you’ve dragged luggage up 200 steps.
Beach access changes everything. Morning coffee on your terrace, afternoon swimming, evening passeggiata—the rhythm of a Monterosso apartment stay revolves around the Mediterranean in ways other villages can’t match.
Shopping is easier. More supermarkets, more variety, longer hours. The practical reality of self-catering becomes pleasant rather than challenging.
Other villages offer charm. Monterosso offers charm plus infrastructure. It’s the difference between romantic suffering and romantic comfort—both are valid, but only one includes sandy beaches and flat streets.
Location Guide
Apartments in the centro storico put you in authentic medieval Monterosso: narrow streets, stone buildings, the church of San Giovanni Battista just steps away. The beach requires a 10-minute walk through the tunnel, but you’re surrounded by centuries of history. Restaurants here are more traditional, the atmosphere more local.
Old town apartments suit people who came for Italian village life, not beach vacation. The stairs are fewer than in other villages but they still exist. The tradeoff is authenticity—you’re living where families have lived since the medieval era.
Medieval atmosphere, caruggi alleyways, the Gothic church—Cinque Terre as you imagined it.

Fegina apartments line the beach promenade where Il Gigante guards the shore. Many have sea-view terraces. The terrain is flat—genuinely flat, with elevators in some buildings. Beach clubs, the train station, and beachfront restaurants are steps away. It feels more resort than village.
Fegina is for people who want beach vacation first, Italian village second. There’s nothing wrong with that—the swimming is extraordinary, the convenience real. But don’t expect old-town atmosphere. You’re trading charm for comfort.

Editorial Interlude
The tunnel through Aurora Tower takes five minutes to walk, connecting two different worlds. Old town residents use it for beach days. Fegina residents use it for authentic dinners. Understanding this connection is key to choosing your apartment—you’re never far from the other side.

Location Guide
Apartments climbing the hillside above both old and new town offer panoramic views: the entire coastline visible, both beaches below, the terraces rising behind. The tradeoff is stairs—more than old town, different from Fegina’s flatness. But the sunrise over the Mediterranean from a hillside terrace is worth the climb.
Hillside apartments are for people who’ve been before, who know what they want and what they’re willing to trade for it. The views are the best in Monterosso. The walk home after dinner is the price. I think it’s worth it.

Practical Considerations
Parking proximity matters. Monterosso has the best parking of any Cinque Terre village—which still means distant and expensive. Apartments near the Loreto parking area reduce the luggage struggle.
Air conditioning is common. The larger buildings in Fegina often have proper AC, a rarity in Cinque Terre. For July-August stays, this comfort is significant.
Noise profiles differ. Old town is quiet at night. Beach promenade apartments hear summer revelry until late. Hillside apartments hear nothing but crickets. Choose according to your sleeping needs.
Kitchen quality varies. Fegina apartments in newer buildings often have full kitchens. Old town apartments in ancient buildings sometimes have minimal facilities. Ask specifically what you’re getting.
Monterosso apartments come in more varieties than other villages offer. The choices require thought—but the options themselves are a luxury the other villages don’t provide.
Living Local
A Monterosso apartment creates a different vacation rhythm than other villages. Morning swim before the crowds. Home for lunch to escape midday heat. Afternoon return to the beach when it quiets. Evening passeggiata as the light softens. The apartment becomes your anchor, the beach your orbit.
I watch apartment guests and hotel guests move differently through the day. Apartment people are relaxed—they have a home base, they can retreat, they don’t feel pressure to extract value every moment. That relaxation is what Monterosso is for.

Exploration Base
Monterosso sits at the northern end of Cinque Terre, with direct trains to all other villages. From a Monterosso apartment, you can reach Vernazza in 4 minutes by train, Riomaggiore in 12. Day-trip the other villages, return to superior infrastructure, repeat.
People debate which village to stay in. My answer depends on what they want. For beach plus exploration, Monterosso wins. You have the best base facilities and easy access to everywhere else. The train makes distance irrelevant.

Local Wisdom
Monterosso has multiple food shops, longer hours, and better selection than any other village. For self-catering, this matters enormously. You can actually buy what you want when you want it—a simple pleasure that becomes remarkable after experiencing the limitations elsewhere.
The Grocery Reality
A Monterosso apartment offers something rare in Cinque Terre: comfort that doesn’t require sacrifice. You can have the beach and the history, the convenience and the authenticity, the views and the flat terrain. It’s just a matter of which apartment and which neighborhood.
The village doesn’t demand you earn your experience through suffering. It simply offers it—the Mediterranean, the mountains, the medieval and the modern, all accessible from whatever apartment becomes your temporary home.
Choose based on what matters to you. Then stop choosing and start living. The village will handle the rest.
